After the many setbacks in the struggle against the army now and then some small successes were achieved, but more important, the revolution gained momentum and more and more was supported by the people in Cuba. In a widely supported student protest many were killed. From the mountains of the Sierra Maestra a guerrilla war was fought in which many arms were seized. As a result of that the revolutionaries were able to open more and more fronts against the government army. In increasing occasions the revolutionary army claimed victory. Finally, after increasing numbers of soldiers choosing the opposite site or surrendering, the dictator fled the island. A general strike, the rebel army's victorious entry into Havana and the revolution had become a fact.
