Havana, the anniversary of José Marti.
José Marti is a 19th century revolutionary and thus a national hero
in this by revolution-dominated country.
Even more than for heroic acts in the fight against Spanish colonialism
José Marti is known as poet and writer. Many young children learn reading and writing
by his educational stories. His birthday is celebrated every year with many festivities and
processions for which the children practise all year long the chanting of
revolutionary songs. Like you can see here in downtown Havana on the ´Prado´, after the
revolution renamed to ´Paseo de José Marti´.
One of the peculiar aspects of revolutions is the renaming of streets. Everyone keeps on referring
to the street by its old name, it's only the tourists that run around in bewilderment because
nobody seems to know what street they are looking for, and only after pointing at their city map
with a sigh of relief one says : oooooh you mean ´The Prado´ !!!
